Princess Elizabeth 21st birthday was celebrated whilst she was on tour with her parents and her sister Margaret in Africa. The brooch was a birthday present from 42,000 children in Southern Rodesia. The children donated their pocket money to contribute to create the brooch for the Princess. The brooch is made in the shape of a flamed lily which is a national flower

When the Princess came home from Kenya, which had to be cut short due the death of her father in 1952.  The brooch was worn by the now Queen Elizabeth on her black outfit.  The brooch has been worn on many occasions by the Queen since.
