The stones to make the set were utilised from two unused badges of the Order of the Garter and one sword handle.
The necklace became known as the Coronation necklace and had matching earrings. Since the passing of Queen Victoria the necklace has been worn by Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911, Queen Elizabeth in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
The necklace and earrings passed to Queen Elizabeth II when she came to the throne in 1953. She has worn the necklace for the State Opening of Parliament and for her Diamond Jubilee portrait as did Queen Victoria
