Turquoise stones were very fashionable during the 20th Century. The turquoise parure, which included this necklace, which is now worn by the Duchess of Gloucester, was a wedding present from the Duke and Duchess of Teck in 1893 to their daughter Queen Mary when she married George V.

Queen Mary gave the parure to her future daughter in law Lady Alice Montaagu-Douglas-Scott when she Married Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester.
