The Sword of Offering Replica

The Monarch is invested with the sword of offering during the coronation ceremony. This takes place after the anointing, when the sovereign is robed and presented with various symbolic ornaments. The Archbishop blesses the sword and delivers it to the monarch placing it in the sovereign’s hand This symbolises that it should be used for the protection and good and the punishment of evil. The sword is then placed on the altar. After this ceremony the sovereign is crowned.

The decoration of the sword was made to be viewed pointing downwards.  The sword was made for the coronation of George IV, and in 1902 it was used for the coronation of Edward VII, and at this time it jointed the regalia in the Tower of London.  The sword has been used at every coronation since.
