What is the Crown of Wilhelm II
The Crown of Wilhelm II was made in 1888 for Wilhelm II, in his capacity as King of Prussia (and German Emperor)
It belongs to the category of Prussian royal regalia, and is often referred to as part of the broader Prussian Crown Jewels.
Although made for a monarch, this crown was never used in an actual coronation or worn by Wilhelm II. Its purpose was strictly representational and ceremonial/heraldic.
Design & Materials
The crown is richly ornamented and symbolically designed. Key details:
It features eight half-arches rising from a gold base.
On its top sits a large sapphire. Atop the sapphire rests a diamond-studded cross.
Decoration includes 142 rose-cut diamonds, 18 additional diamonds, and eight large pearls placed between the arches.
Inside, the crown was lined with red velvet (in historical descriptions) — a sign of traditional royal craftsmanship.
According to German sources, the crown’s diameter is about 21 cm, height about 20 cm.
Because of this lavish design, the crown is far more ornate than many previous Prussian crowns — which were often more modest.
