The Hungarian Orb

The Hungarian Orb, also known as the Royal Orb of Hungary, is one of the four main pieces of the Hungarian Crown Jewels, alongside the Holy Crown, sceptre, and coronation sword. The orb is a symbol of Christian kingship and the divine authority of the monarch.

It is made of gilded silver and surmounted by a small cross, representing the power of Christ over the world. The surface is richly decorated with filigree and enamel medallions, showing saints and religious motifs, in keeping with medieval coronation regalia. Its spherical shape signifies the universal nature of royal power — the king’s rule over both earthly and spiritual matters under God.

Traditionally, the orb was handed to the newly crowned king during the coronation ceremony in Székesfehérvár as a sign that his authority was sanctioned not only by the nobility but also by divine right. Together with the Holy Crown of St. Stephen, it remains one of Hungary’s most treasured national symbols.
