Given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria, on Christmas Eve 24th December 1844
The Order was painted by the Enamel Painter William Essex. Being well established in the royal circles, he became the Enamel Painter to Queen Victoria in 1837, and Enamel painter to Prince Albert in 1841.

He made numerous portraits of Queen Victoria which were set into bracelets and distributed as gifts.

This order was bequeathed to Queen Mary in 1931
